10 signs of toilet training readiness

There is no ‘perfect’ time for toilet training, however, there are some signs that your child might be ready and receptive to the transition.

1. Showing interest in the toilet e.g., noticing when you or others go in

2. Periods of dryness lasting at least one hour

3. Regular bowel movements

4. The ability to follow simple instructions

5. The ability to pull their pants up and down independently

6. Fidgeting or squirming before a urinating or a bowel movement

7. Hiding/wanting privacy for bowel movements or to urinate

8. Communicating to you when they have a soiled nappy

9. Communicating when they are urinating in their nappy

10. Communicating that they are about to urinate in their nappy

This is not an exhaustive list and not all children will show all of these signs, particularly if your child has a neurodevelopmental disorder such as autism. For individualised support with toilet training and/or developing skills for toilet training readiness arrange an appointment with one of our Occupational Therapists.
